The Christian Brothers Theatre Department is dedicated to providing for all students as much opportunity for artistic growth as possible. We foster this growth in three primary areas.

First, by taking the Theatre Arts class students receive an academic approach to the world of theater. A full year course, the Theater Arts instructor is able to cover in great depth all areas of theatre history, playwriting, production, performance and the scenic and technical arts. Students taking theatre arts at CB are more than ready to work confidently at entry or apprentice level positions in professional, community or college theaters.

Second, the Theatre Department sponsors three major theatrical events each year: the fall play, the One-Act Festival, and the spring musical. The One-Act Festival is especially important because it gives students a chance to write, direct and perform. Also, every year we select the best one-act play and bring it, along with students performing monologues and duet scenes, to compete at the Lenaea Festival of Plays, sponsored by the Department of Theatre and Dance at California State University at Sacramento. This wonderful three day immersion in theatre allows students to meet other high school theatre students where they compare notes and network.

Third, the school's Open Mic Night uses the theatre as its venue and students are urged to share their talents with a student audience. In the past Open Mic has hosted a hight eclectic array of acts, everything from stand-up comedians, to rock bands to jugglers and poets.

It is crucial that students are given as much chance as possible to hone their skills, whether they work on stage or back stage. This is the basis of our department.
