The Christian Brothers High School Choral Student will complete the choral program having developed an understanding and knowledge of music as a complete art form. Students will develop an understanding of music theory, music history, sight-signing as well as proper vocal technique. Students will grow as individuals and have an increased sense of confidence by practicing self expression and learning to work as a team. Students will mature as they learn to embrace the world and all its cultures by experiencing the power of music working through them.
The Christian Brothers Student can experience the world of choral music through any of the following offered academic and curricular courses.
- Women's Choir(10 credits/year)
Open to all CBHS students
An ensemble for beginning students of vocal music. This course involves basic musicianship skills (theory/note reading), history/appreciation, and the rehearsal and performance of repertoire appropriate for the developing voice. Students will learn standard vocal technique and develop sight-reading skills and rehearsal techniques. Students are required to participate in all performances, festivals and rehearsals as indicated in the Choral Handbook. Fulfills U.C./C.S.U. "f" subject requirement.
- Men's Choir(10 credits/year)
Open to all CBHS students
An ensemble for any male student interested in vocal music. This course involves basic musicianship skills (theory/not reading), history/appreciation, and the rehearsal and performance of repertoire appropriate for the developing voice. Students will learn standard vocal technique and develop sight-reading skills and rehearsal techniques. Students are required to participate in all performances, festivals, and rehearsals as indicated in the Choral Handbook. Fulfills U.C./C.S.U. "f" subject requirement.
- Concert Choir(10 credits/year)
Prerequisites: minimum of one year in CBHS choir, or audition.
This course is an ensemble for experienced male and female singers and involves a course of study in rehearsal and performance of a wide range of repertoire covering numerous musical genres. Students will learn vocal technique, further their sight reading skills and develop as choral musicians. Students are required to participate in all performances, festivals and rehearsals as indicated in the Choral Handbook. Fulfills U.C./C.S.U. "f" subject requirement.
- Chamber Singers(10 credits/year)
Placement by audition only
This course is an ensemble for experienced female singers and involves a course of study in rehearsal and performance of a wide range of repertoire covering numerous musical genres. Students will learn vocal technique, further their sight reading skills and develop as choral musicians. Students are required to participate in all performances, festivals and rehearsals as indicated in the Choral Handbook. Fulfills U.C./C.S.U. "f" subject requirement.
- Honors Chorale(10 credits/year)
Prerequisites: advanced placement by audition/evaluation/exam which includes fundamentals of music theory, basic muscianship skills/ sight singing an d a minimum of one year in Chorus at CBHS.
An advanced, mixed ensemble for advanced choral students. The course of study involves the rehearsal and performance of a wide range of repertoire from the Renaissance to present genres. Students will learn vocal technique, further their sight reading skills and develop as choral musicians. Students are required to participate in all performances, festivals and rehearsals as indicated in the Choral Handbook. Fulfills U.C./C.S.U. "f" subject requirement. This course receives CBHS honors credit.
- Jazz Choir(10 credits/year offered outside the regular school day)
Prerequisites: advanced placement by audition/evaluation/exam, which includes the fundamentals of music theory, basic musicianship skills and sight singing. Student must have at least one year of choral experience in a CBHS ensemble and be registered for Chorale during the school day. Auditions in April.
A performance based ensemble for advanced singers. It involves a course of study in rehearsal and performance of repertoire from the jazz idiom. Students will learn standard vocal techniques. Students are required to participate in all performances, festivals and rehearsals as indicated in the Choral Handbook. Fulfils U.C./C.S.U. "f" subject requirement.

This is a second semester only ensemble open to any female student in the choral department. This ensemble rehearses once a week in the evening. Auditions take place in January and this ensemble performs at the "Jazz Dessert" and "Hollywood Bowl" concerts.
